Limited Edition Print Shop

Limited Edition Prints are now available for a short time through  roseannelynch.bigcartel.com. These photographs were taken last year in Paris when I was on my residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais. I had some of these available for sale at the opening of Show.

The photographs were taken with a medium format Rolleicord camera and have been printed by hand. I have chosen a small selection of 5 prints to sell online from the various places I photographed during the residency. I found the leather bound books in the library of the Centre Culturel Irlandais itself. The beautiful sculptural object is an old instrument from the Physics Department of the University of Paris, which inspired a series called Instruments of Measurement and Conduction. (Two photographs from this series are in the exhibition Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) at the Wandesford Quay Gallery until Dec 1st.) The final two photographs of light were taken at the Musee des Arts et Metiers.

Each photograph is 6" x 6" with a white  border on 8" x 8" fibre based paper, in a limited edition of 25 silver gelatin prints. The prints are €45 each and are now available to buy online by following the link to the shop.

Memories of Paris

In March of last year I won the first Alliance Francaise Photography Award. Part of the prize was a 2 week stay at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. I decided to be there during Paris Photo back in November, and to put the prize money towards the 3 day Lens Culture Portfolio reviews.

I have put off writing this blog as I really didn’t know what words to use – and on my return to real life it took time to digest the experience. I underestimated the power of two weeks alone with my artist self, - no domestics, no responsibilities to others, just me, artist me.

The portfolio reviews were intense, encouraging and exhausting. You had up to 5 x 20minute reviews each day, a bit like speed dating without the humour (I imagine!) I was told that my work is very Czech avant garde.

Paris Photo, at Grand Palais, was 3 days surrounded by photography. I saw so much work originating in 5”x4” film, negatives scanned and printed huge, and lots of really interesting non lens based work that challenged the bounderies of what photography is, or can be.

Having spent the previous 3 days in the company of the same group of reviewees, who all had free passes to the first day of Paris photo, I was swanning about saying hello to every second person. It was like being on Patrick Street on a Saturday, stopping for coffee breaks with fellow survivors!

I also made a small series of photos while I was in Paris using my Rolleicord, so when I got home I had the pleasure of processing 14 rolls of film, and days and days in the darkroom printing. The bliss of Paris kept alive.

Yesterday I was at a talk in the Glucksman Gallery UCC, by artist Nick Miller, and he was talking about the experience of painting. He described feeling truly alive when making his art. That is what Paris felt like. Two weeks of being fully alive. And that feeling lasts into the darkroom, and into the studio where I sit looking at the images lined up on the shelf and swim in them a while.

It has been a busy few months since I won the Alliance Francaise Photography Award back in April. This morning I board a plane headed for Paris to spend 2 weeks on a residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais that was part of that award. I am looking forward to exploring Paris and being inspired. It will be wonderful to have the next 2 weeks dedicated to focusing on my work. I also plan on visiting Paris Photo and taking part in the LensCulture FotoFest Portfolio Reviews. I'm sure I'll return with many wonderful stories of my adventures.

Current & Upcoming Projects

With all the excitement of winning the Alliance Francaise Award still whirling around me, I continue to be busy. I am currently working on a public art piece for Fort Camden in Crosshaven. I am looking at time passing, stillness and light within the fort, and the large scale abstract images will be shown on the outside of the building reflecting light back into Cork harbour. The piece will be shown from July when the fort will reopen to the public.

I am also preparing for a solo exhibition in Queen Street Studios in Belfast during Belfast Photo Festival, which is the 4th - 14th of August. I am really looking forward to this opportunity as it will be my first exhibition in the city. Its great to see all the new photo festivals, exhibitions and events that have begun to happen in Ireland over the last couple of years.

It will be a busy summer as I'm doing a 5x4 workshop in Paris in June, with Michael Smith and Paula Chamlee. I'm also going to New York for a few weeks in June & July both to soak up the culture and to make contacts with galleries and curators over there. If you have any recommendations for me either in terms of galleries/curators or things to see and do while I'm there, I'd love to hear them.

My 2 week residency in the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris has been booked for November to coincide with Paris Photo, which I have a heard a lot about and am looking forward to experiencing it for myself. And I have also been invited to do a 2 week residency under the curation of Stephen McGlynn, at The Guest House in Shandon, early in September, when I plan to have a large format festival for myself!
